Diet and Exercise Encouragement

posted Jun 12, 2011 20:16:01 by ChristinaUlmerMeece
I would love to know what you ladies do to keep motivated in the diet and exercise department! I began a concentrated effort to lose weight about a month ago. My wonderful husband bought me a new treadmill and I am also trying very hard to nix processed foods and drink plenty of water (half my body weight in ounces, which is difficult.) I have lost about 7 lbs. since I started!! :) What do you do? Do you have any tips for keeping up your energy for a tired momma of four? Often, I hit the floor running and I'm exhausted by the end of the day, so it's hard for me to make myself exercise.

Good for you! And congratulations on losing 7 pounds. That's incredible! When I was young and had small children, I just ate less and I made sure I did a 20 minute workout every day. It's funny, but after my second child, I weighed less than I had ever weighed in my life!

I personally think you will stay tired. You are working overtime during these years. The only thing that might help is to establish a "quiet hour" after lunch where every one lays in bed and either sleeps or quietly reads so that you could rest. When our girls were young, our schedule and routine were my best friends :).

It's been harder for me to loose the baby weight after this last one... but after Eden I was as thin as I'd ever been too. I'm only a few pounds above where I want to be this time too... and I know it's because I've been slacking in the diet department. Leila is not a good sleeper still so I'm very tired. I snack for the energy I'd rather be getting making Zzzzzzzz's.

My only tid bit of advice is to incorpaorate excercize into daily life... an official workout may be just too much to ask these busy days. But walking a trail or just around the neighborhood with the kids is very doable... and pushing that stroller sure does burn calories! In bad weather, I take my kids to the mall and we walk around. My father in law owns a smoothie stand so the kids get a drink and are happy to be there. =) Playing with the kids is good excercise, as is vigourous cleaning. =)

I'm sorry Leila is not a good sleeper, Kaytee. I know that's hard! Jaron was not a good sleeper until about 9 months! Thankfully my last two girls have been little sleepy-heads! I like what you said about incorporating exercise into my day. When I first got my treadmill, I think I overdid it, trying to do the thirty-minute workouts (not to mention how difficult it is to find a solid 30-min. chunk of time!) I ended up doing it late at night after the kids went to bed and then couldn't get to sleep. I'm now trying to just do a couple of 15-min. increments throughout the day.

Mrs. Fink, I suppose it is normal that I am tired. :) My body has definitely been through a lot with four pregnancies in six years! I guess I'm just longing for a "power-pill" or mega-vitamin to give me a boost!

I really threw my back out last week, so, instead of focusing on losing weight, I think I really need to focus on strengthening my abdominal muscles, which are obviously weakened from pregnancies. Does anyone know any good core-strengthening programs??

Pilates is the very best thing for core strength. I had picked up a video to do pilates at home but just watching them I could NOT figure it out! It was discouraging to even attempt it! I then signed up for a pilates class at a local continuing education facility... it's an all women, once a week, 45 min. class for beginners. It helped me so so much, with abs, back muscles and my neck, which is a problem spot for me. This time of year isn't possible for that, so I'm taking the semester off but I think in the fall I'll sign up for the next level. (I've taken the beginners 3 times... with a couple pregnancies in between. =)Most of the women in the class are odler and take the beginners class indefinently lol)

Pilates!!!! Best thing for your core. Also really helped my neck, which I have trouble with. I couldn't figure it out with a video at home (I stared at my TV thinking 'huh? How exactly am I supposed to do THAT'... so I took a once a week, 45 min. all women class at a continuing education trade school near me. I've taken the beginner course 3 times (with a couple pregnancies in between!). Too busy in the summer for it (or should I say my husband is too busy for me to take it!) but in the fall I hope to (finally) take the next level. Moms of little ones have to have some strength! Skinny is nice... strong is necessary!

Skinny is nice... strong is necessary! I like that. So true! I would love to take a class, but that won't happen. We're 35 miles from a large town. They had a belly-dancing class a few years ago here in town, but my husband said NO! lol!

Hey Christina, Congrats to you on 7lbs. That is a great start. Start by taking baby steps.. No equipment required. I use a website called "Everyday Health". It has helped me tremendously. I count my calories. I don't have much time to get a chunk of time to dedicate to exercising. You would be suprised the calories you burn during the day. It is amazing. Simple house cleaning burns calories. The big thing that has helped me is just watching what I eat. I thought it would be culture shock at the beginning because I love to eat, but I survived: eat smaller portions, drink lots of water, take vitamins (I just take prenatal all the time) go to bed early to insure you get plenty of sleep, and take a walk with the kids. It works I promise. I weighed 215 lbs after my second and I currently weigh 152.9. It works! I don't own any equipment. I do use the Leslie Sansone walking tapes during the winter when I can't get out as much. I wish you the best.

Hi, Kimberly! My husband, Daniel, went to school with your husband in Texas! He has spoken of him many times! Thank you for all the tips and advice! I know that just eating right and staying active really helps with the weight loss! There are so many gimmick weight-loss programs out there, but I did find one online called Flat-Belly Solution, which is mostly a basic nutrition course! I've learned so much about different foods and how they affect your particular metabolism type!

I'm sad to say that I haven't lost any more weight lately. I've run into a brick-wall so to speak with hypo-thyroidism and hormone imbalance. It has really knocked me flat on my face, especially this last week. I'm discouraged because the doctor I went to see wouldn't treat me because I'm nursing my baby. I believe I will go back up to Hammond to see Dr. Streeter soon and hopefully get some of my symptoms taken care of. I would appreciate prayers for wisdom!!

Christina, I will definately keep you in my prayers. Yes, Daniel went to school with us in Texas, as well as his cousin. Don't get discouraged, everything happens in life for a reason. It is hard for us at times to understand but He will take care of you. I hope all goes well with Dr. Streeter.
